Lab grown leather, Micro greens in SPACE, and more! - 🌿Vertical Farming Weekly - May 25th, 2022

We've all heard about lab-grown meat, and some of us already have it at our tables. But theres another animal product that you may get your green thumbs on before your lab grown Big Mac, and that's lab grown leather.

Some of you may be wondering why we would need to artificially cultivate such a thing when faux leather, aka pleather, already exists? And the answer to that is simple - plastic. Despite the issues traditional methods of harvesting leather carry (mainly the carbon impact of raising millions of cows and other animals with desirable hides), animal based leather is the only true sustainable option due to it's short decomposition in comparison to urethane and vinyl based leathers (Were talking an average of 50 years verses 500).

Lab grown leather, and animal products in general, may not be the vegan solution we all wanted, but there's no denying the sustainability of organic materials. So, when you're out shopping for your next wallet, purse, or car, consider buying genuine leather. It may not be lab grown, but it's a step in the right direction for our planet.
